LONG TERM DISABILITY

Benefit Summary

PetWow offers eligible staff members participation in PetWow’s robust group long term disability plan through Sun Life Financial. PetWow's Group long term disability plan is 100% employer paid so eligible staff members pay absolutely nothing for this crucial benefit.

Petwow's long term disability policy through Sun Life Financial protects your income in the case of off the job accident or disability beginning after 90 days (which is typically when any "short" term disability plan will end). Our long term disability plan will pay out 60% of your earnings up to $4,000.00 per month until you can either return to work, or else reach social security retirement age. Moreover, any payouts are TAX FREE which means that the total spendable income from disability payments will amount to significantly more than 60% of your pre-disability post-tax income.

Eligibility

  • Basic Eligibility:

    • A Team member must have "Full-Time" employment status, which means having averaged 64 hrs per bi-weekly pay period (32 hrs/week) over the last 6 bi-weekly pay periods (or if newly hired, anticipated to average 32 hrs/week over the next 6 bi-weekly pay periods); or hold a managerial, professional groomer, or veterinarian job title. Calculated hours include regular hours, overtime hours, paid vacation hours, paid holiday hours, paid sick day hours, and paid continuing education hours.​

  • Waiting Period:

    • All eligible newly hired team members will immediately be added to the Long Term Disability plan within the 30 day window immediately following their 90th day of employment. In addition, Human Resources runs a report each quarter to determine if any team member's average hours per week warrant a change in their formal employment status such that they should be designated Full-Time (i.e. 32+ hours/week). Any team members who warrant a change to Full-Time status will be immediately enrolled in PetWow's Long Term Disability benefit. There are no additional "Qualifying Events" which afford team members the opportunity to enroll in the retirement plan outside of either the Initial or Annual Open Enrollment periods.

Enrollment

  • Initial Employment Eligibility and Enrollment: Upon initial employment, it will be determined whether or not you are likely to meet the hours/week eligibility threshold. Those new staff members who meet the threshold will be automatically added to the plan after 90 days of employment.

  • Subsequent Eligibility and Enrollment: On an annual basis, PetWow's Human Resources department evaluates all active staff members to determine their eligibility for various benefits. If a staff member who was not previously eligible for long term disability is determined to have become eligible, they will be automatically enrolled during the open enrollment window.
